The Sand Ceremony

The Unity sand ceremony is a novel alternative for the popular "unity candle ceremony' incorporated into many of todays weddings. The essence is to symbolize the union of "two into one". This sand version is not only beautiful and interesting but also more appropriate for an outdoor setting and if you have other members of the family you wish to incorporate i.e.; children. The ceremony is also an opportunity to recognize specific individuals who have played an instrumental role in the couple's lives. The sand ceremony can be personalized in many different ways to fit the occasion. The ceremony usually takes place whist exchanging the couple's vows. After the Unity Sand Ceremony, the couple has a unique keepsake to remember their special day.

The meaning of the sand ceremony

  1. The flowing sand and blending of the colours in the Unity Sand Ceremony symbolize the bring together of two lives into one. The two sands symbolise everything that the bride and groom have been or will become in the future.
  2. The separate sands once poured into the unity vase or bottle can never be put back into their separate vases, they are forever entwined just as the lives and loves of the bride and groom.
  3. Some couples prefer to leave a small amount of sand in their respective container to show that even though they now function as one, they remain individuals. Some couples also choose the colours of sand to represent their meaning ie: yellow is the colour of the sun and represents sunshine, happiness and joy, others choose colours they enjoy, look pretty or to match their home decor.

The Process of the Sand Ceremony

  • The sand ceremony, in its simplest form, features two glass containers that are each filled with a different colour of sand and placed either side of a glass container or bottle. The container can be empty or filled with a base layer of neutral coloured sand - some versions also include an additional small container of coloured sand used by the Preist or Celebrant/officiant. For more information talk to your wedding Celebrant.
  • The bride and groom normally take alternating turns, usually accompanied by vowels, a short reading or statement from the officiant pouring layers of sand into the centre container until it is filled. The officiant next caps the container with a cork, wax or airtight lid. The sealed container then becomes a colourful keepsake that serves as a powerful reminder of the couple's wedding day. An alternative method is both the bride and groom pour the sands in together at the same time blending their sands making them one.
  • There are no set rules for the sand ceremony therefore you can make it very personal and unique to your own wedding from choosing when to do your sand ceremony, what to say, how many sands to use and the design, the sand colours and whether you choose to have anyone else participate in your ceremony. Some bride and grooms even like to leave space and place the sands from their honeymooon location on the top! Some couples wish to have every member present place sands in.
  • One variation of the sand ceremony in particular has become popular among couples with children. During these blended family weddings the children of the bride and/or groom are invited to the altar; each child adds his or her own layer of coloured sand to the container, turning the vase into a symbol of two families coming together as one. Some couples also choose to involve other close family members such as their parents and grandparents for the same reason, there's nearly no limit to the number of colours that can be used to make wedding sand ceremonies a unique and easy way for couples to broaden their celebration to be about more than just them.
